Like several other manufacturers, Hyundai has noticed a significant increase in demand for hybrid models as the rise of electric models seems to be slowing down. In short, this is why the Korean manufacturer has decided to revise its strategy.
Earlier last week, Hyundai made an important announcement on this subject. The goal is now to offer up to 14 hybrid models across its range.
A Lack of Infrastructure
One of the reasons behind this decision, as mentioned by the Korean manufacturer, is the lack of infrastructure. Certainly, this is not really a problem here, thanks to Hydro-Québec and all its partners. However, the situation is different elsewhere in the world. This is why Hyundai believes it is better to allow the charging infrastructure network to improve before significantly ramping up the production of electric models.
Maintaining Goals
Although the current situation is different from what the manufacturer might have expected, the long-term goals remain unchanged. Hyundai still intends to offer more 100% electric models by 2030. The brand’s goal is to reach sales figures of two million units annually by that time.
A Range-Extended Vehicle
Do you remember the Chevrolet Volt? Personally, it was a vehicle I loved. To refresh your memory, this car was powered by an electric motor but used a gasoline engine as a generator when needed. The concept was very innovative at the time, but political pressure made enthusiasts not consider it a true electric car. Thus, the Volt was replaced by the Bolt, a 100% electric model. However, it turns out that the idea of an electric motor powered by a gasoline engine was not a bad one at all, and it’s a concept that Hyundai intends to exploit.
We have very little information on the subject at the moment, but it is said to be a vehicle offering a total range of 900 kilometers. In theory, you should be able to drive without using the gasoline generator most of the time. However, the ability to use it when needed would reassure buyers, and that’s why such a product is expected to be very popular when it hits the market.
