Don’t panic if you suddenly see your check engine light come on. You are still safe to keep driving your vehicle (unless the light is blinking, more on that below), however you should give us a call to make an appointment and get your vehicle checked out as soon as you can.
The check engine light can be an indication that there is an issue with the engine, or it can be a sign that you are getting poor gas mileage or your emissions system is not working correctly. If you ignore this little light for too long you risk doing further damage to vehicle’s engine.
One thing you can do yourself before bringing the vehicle in is make sure your gas cap is tightly secured, as a loose gas cap can cause the check engine light to come on. Tighten your gas cap, making sure it clicks, and then see if the light goes off. Keep in mind it can take several days of driving before the light goes off, depending on the type of driving you are doing.
The only time you need to immediately stop driving the vehicle is if you see the check engine light flashing. If this is the case there is a more serious issue with the engine and continuing to drive the car could damage other components on the vehicle. If you have a flashing check engine light stop driving and have the vehicle towed into our dealership to be check out.
Either way if your check engine light comes on, come in and see us. Our Hyundai-trained technicians have the proper training and equipment too quickly and accurately diagnose any issues your engine may be having.
